Yoga used as a treatment

Medical Yoga Therapy

Medical Yoga Therapy begins with an assessment of the person: how they move, where the limits are, and what a stated condition does in practice. Specific postures, breathing and props are then used to work with that condition, and the practice is changed as the person improves. It works alongside medical care.

Assisted backbend at the rope wall
Assisted therapeutic inversion
Restorative reclining over a chair

Conditions commonly treated

Practice is chosen for the issue in front of it, with props for support and traction.

Lower Back LumbarSciatica Neck & Shoulder CervicalSpine Knee & JointsPostural imbalance Restricted mobilityStress & sleep

Best used alongside medical advice, not as a replacement for it.

What you study

Assessment

Read a body before working with it: range of movement, posture, breathing, and what a condition actually restricts.

Contraindications

Know what not to do for a given condition, and how to tell when a practice is doing harm rather than good.

Adaptation

Change a posture to fit the person: reduce the range, add support, or substitute a shape that does the same work.

Props for support and traction

Use belts, blocks, bolsters and the rope wall to carry weight, open a joint, or make a position sustainable.

Sequencing for a condition

Build practice around a specific issue, back, neck or knee, instead of following a fixed class.

Review

Reassess and adjust. What changed, what did not, and what to try next.

Private Medical Yoga Therapy

One to one, built entirely around your assessment.

A private session begins with assessment, then works on your specific condition with the props and adaptations that suit it. Held daily between 1 and 4 PM by appointment.

The B.K.S. Iyengar method

Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga is the method developed by B.K.S. Iyengar. It works through a fixed vocabulary of postures, practised with exact alignment, held for time, and arranged in a deliberate order. Props, ropes, belts, blocks, bolsters and chairs, let a posture be done correctly before it is done unaided. Progress is measured by precision, not by how many poses you move through.

Standing balance with support
Supported backbend over a chair
Supported inversion at the rope wall

How the practice works

Alignment

Where each part of the body belongs in a posture, and how a change at the foot or hip changes everything above it.

Time in the pose

Postures are held. Staying is where the work happens, not the entry and the exit.

Sequence

Poses are taught in order, standing before seated, seated before inversions, so each one prepares the next.

Props

Ropes, blocks and belts make a correct position reachable, then come away as the body allows.
